The Siege of Sidney Street: The East End of London’s Most Sensational Shootout, with Andrew Whitehead

On January 3, 1911, two Latvian anarchists wanted for a police murder were tracked down to a room on Sidney Street in London’s overwhelmingly Jewish East End. For six hours, the two besieged men, equipped with semiautomatic pistols, held out against the police and army sharpshooters. Winston Churchill, then Britain’s interior minister, came to the scene, peering out from a doorway to see the action for himself. Join Jimenez Lai and Young Projects for the debut of two newly commissioned architecture installations at Art Omi in 2024. The event will begin with an introduction from Art Omi’s Senior Architecture Curator Julia van den Hout at Lai’s Outcasts from the Underground and move through the architecture fields to Young Project’s Match House. Both Lai and Young Projects will give remarks about the process of conceptualizing, fabricating, and installing their new, large-scale commissions followed by an audience Q&A.
